Building a Greenland Style Kayak Paddle
December 11th and 12th, 6:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. the museum will present a class which will cover aspects of Greenland style paddle building. Participants will choose one of several typical paddle designs and determine the dimensions of their own paddles using traditional methods. The paddle will then be drawn on wood stock and various methods of shaping will be discussed. Paddles will then be shaped using hand tools. At the end of the class, participants should have either a finished paddle or one that requires only final sanding and fine tuning, with the skills necessary to build many more. Students should bring their own tools. Familiarity with woodworking and related hand tools a plus but not necessary. The course is limited to 8 and cost is $70 per person. The Essex Historical Society and Shipbuilding Museum will offer members of the Museum sails on the Lewis H. Story, September 17th - 21st from Gloucester, two times a day and October 3rd - 31st from Essex Shipbuilding Museum. Please allow 2 hours sailing time. Reservations are required in advance and you must be a member of the Museum. Please call the Museum at (978) 768-7541 form more information or to reserve a sail on the Lewis H. Story.
